In 2020, a lot of us have experienced the world through screens. Sometimes staring at a screen all day is unavoidable, and unfortunately over time it can do some serious damage to our eyes. Here are some tips for avoiding eye strain when you have to look at screens for long periods.
Increasing the size of the text on your screen, when possible, can make things easier on your eyes. Looking at small text can make you squint and bring your face closer to the screen, which can lead to headaches. The easier the text is to read, the less strain on your eyes.
The 20-20-20 rule is simple. After looking at a screen for 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look at something else 20 feet away. This exercise forces your eye muscles to adjust and focus on different objects at varying distances, avoiding the eye strain that comes from looking at one thing for too long. Of course these numbers are just approximate, but breaking up screen time and exercising your eyes are important steps to keep eyes healthy.
Positioning your monitor at a certain distance from you can help avoid eye strain while also preventing neck and back pain that comes with sitting at a computer all day. Keep your monitor about 40 inches away from you, with the center of the screen about 5 inches below eye level. This ergonomic monitor position will make screen time more enjoyable.
We hope these simple adjustments to your screen time lead to less eye strain, so you stay comfortable while completing surveys!
